David Cronenberg:

“It’s really a matter of being funny, being loose, being specific, giving the actors a sense that you know what you’re doing. In my case, I make sure that the actors can look at a monitor and see a recording of what they just shot, so they know exactly what they look like and what’s going on; no secrets, no surprises to hit them later. It’s just being gentle and supportive and still, of course, getting what you want, never letting go until you get what you want.”
